Zimmer Biomet (ZBH) commenced global launch of the Persona® Partial Knee at the end of August. This is the first significant jointly-developed new product for the combined ZBH entity, and is complementary to the Oxford® Partial Knee from Biomet.
Persona Partial was designed with use of the ZiBRA™ Anatomical Modeling System to analyze a database of thousands of bones across a diverse global population. Globally, >1,000 cases with Persona Partial have taken place in the U.S., EMEA and Japan. More than 260 patients are presently enrolled in a ten-year, multi-center, global Persona Partial Knee Clinical Outcomes Study, which will enroll an estimated 600 patients and is expected to complete in 2029.
Dozens of companies market partial/unicompartmental knees, globally; Smith & Nephew and Stryker’s robotic systems are available for use with partial knees. In mid-2Q, ZBH entered into a license agreement for use of patent families supporting technology created by Dr. Peter Bonutti, including patents that address robotic unicompartmental, bicompartmental and total knee arthroplasty, as well as robotic arthroplasty linking robotic systems and computer navigation.
Zimmer’s Persona Total Knee has been on the market since 2013. Persona Partial replaces the fixed bearing knee that was divested to Lima and Smith & Nephew as part of the merger of Biomet and Zimmer. ZBH plans 2H18 initial launches for Persona revision and Trabecular Metal cementless devices, as well.
