Stryker announced a definitive agreement to acquire Vertos Medical, developer of a minimally invasive solution for treating chronic lower back pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. The companies will continue to operate as separate entities and proceed with business as usual until the transaction closes.
Vertos Medical’s mild (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) procedure provides a solution for pain relief and may improve mobility without the need for major surgery. The approach removes a root cause of stenosis through a portal the size of a baby aspirin and requires no implants, no general anesthesia, no stitches and no overnight hospital stay.
One-year results from MOTION, a prospective, randomized controlled study of the procedure, revealed a change in functional improvement at one year. Treated patients were also able to walk 250% longer than before the procedure.
“Allowing patients to get back to what matters most to them is what matters most to us,” said Eric Wichems, Vertos Medical’s Chief Executive Officer. “Stryker’s mission and focus on interventional solutions provides an opportunity to further improve patients’ quality of life.”
