OrthoPediatrics entered into an exclusive agreement to distribute Mighty Oak Medical’s FIREFLY® pedicle screw navigation guides in U.S. pediatric hospitals. FIREFLY can be used with any spinal deformity correction system, including OrthoPediatrics’ RESPONSE scoliosis technology.
FIREFLY guides are 3D-printed, disposable and patient-specific, and present an alternative to complex, radiation-emitting navigation systems during long surgical procedures. Further, they are the only patient-specific pedicle screw guide indicated for use in pediatric patients. The system received initial FDA 510(k) clearance in late 2015, followed one year later by a second 510(k) extending compatibility to all pedicle screw systems and extending indications to include the T1-S2/ilium region.
According to Nick Deeter, founder of pediatric device company WishBone Medical, there are ~3,700 hospitals in the U.S. that perform orthopaedic surgery on children, 268 of which are standalone children’s hospitals.
