Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) will collaborate with Trinity College Dublin to open a 3D bioprinting research lab by the end of 2018, initially focusing on orthopaedic-related projects.
AMBER (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research), a Science Foundation Ireland-funded center headquartered at the college, is a longstanding partner of DePuy Synthes in Ireland. AMBER/JNJ will establish the lab and work together on research projects, with JNJ offering its internal scientific experts as adjunct professors. The lab will accommodate meeting and office space for 12 people, and the tools needed to work with bioprinting and cell/tissue cultures.
As work on the lab commences, AMBER will provide project management and funds for diversification support, recruitment and contract support.
JNJ’s previous partnerships in 3D printing include its acquisition of technology from Tissue Regeneration Systems and an agreement signed with Aspect Biosystems to develop bioprinted knee meniscus tissue, both of which occurred in 2017, and a collaboration with HP, announced in 2016.
