United Orthopedic received FDA 510(k) clearance to market the E-XPE™ vitamin E highly cross-linked polyethylene-based hip liner. The next-generation highly cross-linked poly material is now available with the company’s U2 Total Knee system inserts and as a liner for the U-Motion II acetabular cup.
Vitamin E is blended with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene to help prevent oxidation that can lead to implant wear, with subsequent shedding of debris that can lead to inflammation. Results from accelerated aging tests have demonstrated that E-XPE knee inserts and hip liners exhibited a 60% and 75% reduction, respectively, in wear as measured by weight.
