THINK Surgical and United Orthopedic Corporation will collaborate to pursue reproducible outcomes in total knee replacements, pairing THINK’s Active Robotic System and UNITED’s U2™ knee.
The Active robot combines 3D pre-op planning and a computer-assisted tool to mill and prepare the bone. Ex-U.S., the system’s core technology has been used in thousands ot total hip and knee replacements; in the U.S., Active is the subject of an Investigational Device Exemption study in total knee arthroplasty. FDA clearance is expected within 2019.
UNITED will exclusively distribute for THINK in Taiwan. The companies will examine development of implants that are specifically designed for active robotic surgeries, as opposed to passive procedures where the robot guides the surgeon.
The U2 knee has been commercially available in the U.S. since 2006 and has been implanted in >140,000 cases in 39 countries.
