Smith & Nephew (SNN) completed its acquisition of Blue Belt Technologies, developer of the Navio surgical robotics-assistance system for unicondylar or partial knee replacement. The transaction was announced in early 4Q15.

Blue Belt formed in 2003 to advance the development of technology from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. From 2013, the company entered into a variety of partnerships for use of its surgical assistance technology with companies like DePuy Synthes, DJO, Kinamed, SNN and SurgCenter Development.
SNN intends to expand the Navio platform:
- Total knee application slated to launch in 2017, supporting the JOURNEY II knee
- Bi-cruciate retaining system, complementing SNN’s development of the JOURNEY II XR
- Revision knee in the pipeline (an area not presently served by robotics), as well as applications for total hip and sports-medicine
