Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have updated coverage policies for minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion, maintaining exclusive positive coverage for SI-BONE’s iFuse Implant System®. BCBS is the fourth-largest commercial health insurer in the U.S., covering ~15MM lives.
The BCBS policy states that “use of minimally invasive or percutaneous SIJ fusion products other than titanium triangular implants/devices (e.g., iFuse Implant System) is considered experimental, investigational and/or unproven.” Thus, all other systems, as they are unproven, are not covered by BCBS. SelectHealth in Utah and Geisinger in Pennsylvania also offer exclusive positive coverage for iFuse.
