Average Orthopedic Investment by Year
Orthopedic funding is on pace for its slowest year in the last decade, with just 20 funding announcements through October 2025. Since 2022, investors have looked to de-risk by preferentially seeking later-stage companies with a clear line of sight to commercialization.
Total investment dollars are actually higher than the pre-COVID era and have remained relatively steady in the years since. All told, while there are fewer investments, companies are that are funded are receiving more dollars on average.
Our chart of the month looks at the number of investments with disclosed dollar amounts since 2016 and charts the average amount for each investment over that time. Since 2020, about 86% of investment announcements have disclosed the dollar amount.
Of the 17 announcements in 2025 with disclosed amounts, we estimate an investment total of $548 million, for an average of $32.3 million per investment. So, even though 2025 is on track to be the slowest year in a decade for number of investments, the average amount is the highest during that time span.
