Surgical Planning Associates (SPA) introduced the HipInsight™ augmented reality (AR) intra-operative guidance system for joint replacement. This follows FDA 510(k) clearance of the system, which occurred in January 2021.
An alternative to traditional navigation, robotics and interoperative imaging that provides information on flat screens, outside of the view of the patient, HipInsight projects holograms on AR glasses that effectively give them “x-ray vision,” so that surgeons can see what they need to see, when they need to see it, inside the patient’s body.
HipInsight is the first FDA-cleared surgical guidance platform to be contained entirely within the Microsoft HoloLens 2™ head-mounted device. The system combines cloud-based preoperative planning and virtual interoperative guidance, and offers a seamless and intuitive solution compared to traditional robotic and navigation systems.
Augmedics, a potential competitor to SPA, launched its xvision augmented reality guidance system for spine procedures in January 2020. The company plans to explore additional applications for xvision beyond spinal surgery.
