The global spine market is a massive slice of orthopedics, set to eclipse $10 billion in revenue in 2022 according to our estimates. The segment is top-heavy with deeply entrenched players. The five largest companies in the space – Medtronic, DePuy Synthes, Stryker, NuVasive and Globus Medical – control more than 70% of the spine market.
Our chart of the month shows market share for spine’s ten largest players and all others for 2022. We used company-provided guidance and our internal estimates to project full-year sales. Sales for this chart are inclusive of both spinal hardware and enabling technologies but exclude orthobiologics and bone healing products.
Medtronic remains untouchable at the top of the ranking, with 27% share of the spine market and a renewed focus on taking share. However, there are some compelling races developing among the remaining players. Stryker, NuVasive and Globus all have innovative enabling technologies for spine hitting the market and could further pressure DePuy Synthes’ languishing spine business. ZimVie expects mid-single-digit spine losses in the next few years and will almost certainly be overtaken by ATEC. Likewise, SeaSpine’s expanded portfolio and enabling technology give the company a great chance to move from the number ten spot.
