Orthofix and SeaSpine merged in early January 2023 to become the ninth-largest company in orthopedics. The two companies ranked 13th and 23rd, respectively, before the merger. This month’s chart shows the top 10 largest orthopedic companies based on our 2022 year-end revenue estimates.
Note: we updated this chart on 2/13/23 to reflect Globus Medical’s pending all-stock merger with NuVasive.
Despite its newfound ranking, the combined Orthofix has single-digit market share in all segments in which it competes. However, SeaSpine’s rapid product development pace and Orthofix’s established sales channels could set the stage for significant growth. The new company’s competition in the spine segment is mixed. There are players like DePuy Synthes and ZimVie that faced challenges in recent years, but also powerful competitors like Globus Medical and ATEC.
The 7D Flash Navigation system that came with SeaSpine is a potential game changer for the combined company. SeaSpine placed a record number of units in 4Q22. The system could significantly expand its international sales through Orthofix’s channels and presence in other orthopedic segments.
“7D is a great agnostic platform. It can be used in all different spine surgeries, but it can also be used in surgeries outside of spine. That’s going to be a great opportunity for us as we start combining,” said new Orthofix CEO Keith Valentine.
