Note: we updated this chart with revised estimates in early 2023.
Sales of orthopedic enabling technologies boomed starting in late 2019. This is especially true for robotic systems, which saw several new market entrants like DePuy Synthes and Zimmer Biomet. It seemed that companies set new robotic revenue records every quarter, even in months stricken by severe disruption from the pandemic. These circumstances masked the underlying dynamics of our knee, hip and spine segment data.
Our chart of the month takes a fresh look at our estimated 2021 orthopedic sales by market segment with the inclusion of our new Enabling Technology reporting segment. These products generated $1.1 billion in sales in 2021, or about 2.1% of the orthopedic market. We define orthopedic enabling technology as robotics, navigation, surgical planning and other software. In this context, we’re excluding sports medicine capital equipment like cameras, lights and booms.
Pulling enabling technology sales into a dedicated segment gives greater clarity to our knee, hip and spine market data. It also aligns our segment reporting with the priorities of the companies we cover as they increasingly focus R&D investment on connected technology ecosystems.
