Ceterix Orthopaedics was issued U.S. Patent No. 9,913,638 relating to knee meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament repair—specifically, a method to securely fasten the meniscus during a meniscal root repair.
The new patent further protects the company’s products and methods that allow surgeons to arthroscopically pass suture through soft tissue in very tight joint compartments.
Historically, damage to the meniscal root was addressed by removing some or all of the damaged tissue, though that may increase the risk of future complications. Other methods include creating a tunnel through the tibia to the meniscus, attaching a suture to the soft tissue and extending this suture through the bone tunnel to an anchor just beneath the skin in the lower leg. This, however, may leave too much space between the meniscal root and the anchor, which may lead to a loss of tension over time.
Ceterix’s NovoStitch®Plus Meniscal Repair system is protected by 180+ issued claims, including one protecting its suturing method, issued early in 1Q18.
