The AO Foundation and icotec will jointly develop a new spinal stabilization system based on icotec’s proprietary BlackArmor® Carbon/PEEK composite implant material.
Image artefacts of metal implants in different imaging modalities such as x-ray, CT and MRI are an obstacle in patient follow-up. When using non-metallic BlackArmor Carbon/PEEK implants, patients with spinal tumors can be considered for a larger variety of treatment options with improved therapy planning, radiation dose delivery and follow-up evaluation after separation surgery and stabilization.
BlackArmor combines high strength carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK and a composite flow molding process to yield an interwoven 3D fiber architecture that lends strength and durability and is suitable for complex designs such as pedicle screws, vertebral body replacements, anatomical bone plates, etc. Non-metallic properties also make BlackArmor suitable for the treatment patients for whom metal allergies are a potential concern.
