The Accelerant Venture Capital Fund invested in AMB Surgical to support development of the FLYTE™ Automated Growing Rod for the treatment of juvenile scoliosis, traumatic injuries, etc.
The technology allows for electronic control of adjustable rods used in orthopaedic procedures. FLYTE’s technology allows a surgeon to perform remote, nonsurgical rod expansion. The system also provides data capture/storage and biomechanical feedback.
Flyte represents another technology developed with a focus on the pediatric orthopaedic market. In particular, one similar system comes from NuVasive.
In 2Q15, Ellipse Technologies received FDA 510(k) clearance to market ERC 2, an external remote controller for use with the company’s MAGEC (MAGnetic Expansion Control) Spinal Bracing and Distraction system. In 3Q16, following the company’s acquisition by NuVasive, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services granted a new technology add-on payment for magnetically-controlled growth rods.
Funds received by AMB Surgical will support protyping with a rod for use in external frames, followed by implanted rods for scoliosis treatment and other internal uses.
