Alphatec (ATEC) acquired SafeOp Surgical, provider of neuromonitoring technology, for an initial outlay of US $15MM. ATEC also raised $50MM via private placement, which in part funded the acquisition.
SafeOp’s technology automates SSEPs (Somatosensory Evoked Potentials), and is designed to obviate the need for a technician or other neuromonitoring professional in most procedures. ATEC expects to introduce SafeOp services to the spine market in early 2019.
Further, ATEC announced the appointment of Executive Chairman Mr. Pat Miles as Chief Executive Officer, while Mr. Terry Rich, previously ATEC’s CEO, is appointed President and Chief Operating Officer.
Additional executive appointments include Chief Medical Officer Richard O’Brien, M.D., former Medical Director of neuromonitoring provider Impulse Monitoring, Inc. and Chief Marketing Offifcer Robert Snow, former co-founder and SVP of Marketing at Impulse Monitoring. These two individuals also held positions at SafeOp.
NuVasive acquired Impulse Monitoring in 2011, which now operates as part of NuVasive’s Clinical Services division and was joined by acquisitions of Biotronic NeuroNetwork in 2016 and SafePassage in 2017, both providers of intra-op neurophysiological monitoring services.
