Active Implants enrolled the 100th patient in clinical trials evaluating the NUsurface® Meniscus Implant to treat persistent knee pain from injured or deteriorating meniscus tissue. The SUN and VENUS trials have been underway since 2016 and 2015, respectively.
Pending FDA clearance, launch could occur within three years and would represent the first artificial meniscus to market. The polymer-based implant may offer an option to delay or perhaps avoid knee replacement; it requires no fixation to bone or soft tissues, and is intended to mimic the function of the natural meniscus, redistributing loads across the knee joint. NUsurface has been used in Europe since 2008 and Israel since 2011.
