AAOS announced the cancellation of the 2020 Annual Meeting scheduled for March 24-28 in light of the ongoing spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Academy’s board cited factors such as potential risks associated with a large gathering, increasing travel advisories and restrictions and the need for members to help their local communities, institutions and patients prepare for and react to the COVID-19 spread.
Those over the age of 60 are among the most vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19, according to recent data from the CDC. This is a population that relies on AAOS members to deliver quality musculoskeletal care, and the orthopedic community must do what it can to ensure that this essential care is not interrupted, said AAOS President Kristy L. Weber, M.D., FAAOS.
AAOS said that more information for members, participating faculty, exhibitors and other registrants is forthcoming.
The Annual Meeting—a highlight of the year in orthopedics—was expected to host 479 presentations, nearly 700 exhibiting companies and 27,000 attendees in Orlando.
Important orthopedic research, as well as company and product news, is reserved for the Annual Meeting. We’ll continue to keep ORTHOWORLD Members apprised of these announcements in the coming weeks. If you have news you would like to share, please send it to us.
