Big Four Knee Replacement Sales Trends
During its third quarter earnings call, Zimmer Biomet was asked when its new product cycle would begin to offset some of the knee replacement share losses it faced in recent years.
“If we are losing market share, we’re doing so at a much lower rate than we did before, which again validates that the innovation cycle is working,” said Zimmer Biomet CEO Ivan Tornos.
Our last chart of the month for 2025 shows worldwide knee replacement sales for the top four joint replacement players: Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, J&J MedTech and Smith+Nephew.
We estimate Zimmer Biomet controlled 32.4% of the knee replacement market in 2016. In 2025, it controls 29.6%, a decline of 2.8%. The second part of Mr. Tornos’ statement is also true, however. The greatest share losses came prior to 2022. Over the last three years, the rate of decline is far slower.
So, Zimmer Biomet is losing share. But it isn’t the only one. J&J MedTech lost nearly 4% market share during that time, while Smith+Nephew dropped about 2%.
Stryker picked up 6.4% market share in the last ten years.
As a group, however, the big four knee replacement players saw their combined share drop 2.3% over the last decade as companies like Medacta and Enovis became more established.
