Joint reconstruction product announcements, including the launch of Stryker’s Mako and the unveil of Zimmer Biomet’s forthcoming Rosa knee application, were the most-talked-about on the exhibit hall floor at AAOS 2017. Two themes were prominent: launch of surgical-assisted technologies such as robotics and navigation for knee and hip procedures, and the launch of shoulder systems. There was also more discussion around the role of wearable technology.
As in years past, funding and study announcements were also made. Here we’ve compiled a list of highlights by market segments.
Joint Reconstruction
- Within 2017, Arthrosurface plans EU and U.S. commercial launch of the OVO™ primary stemless total shoulder.
- Consensus Orthopedics launched TracPatch™, a wearable device for real-time, continuous post-surgical remote patient monitoring following total joint replacement. Consensus Orthopedics and the University of Miami Health also announced a collaborative clinical study to evaluate the recovery effectiveness of acute care total knee arthroplasty in patients using TracPatch.
- Corin commenced U.S. launch of its Optimized Positioning System (OPS™) system, designed to reduce wear and dislocation rates in hip arthroplasty.
- DePuy Synthes launched the ATTUNE® Revision Fixed Bearing Tibial Base and 14x50mm Cemented Stem.
- DJO Global launched the AltiVate™ Anatomic Shoulder, featuring P2, a proprietary “porous porous” coating designed to provide superior bone ingrowth.
- DJO Global announced FDA 510(k) clearance to market the Exprt® Revision Hip.
- Integra LifeSciences launched the Titan™ Press-Fit Reverse Shoulder for Fracture, a 2-piece stem design that does not require cement for fixation.
- Intellijoint Surgical received FDA 510(k) clearance to market the intellijoint HIP® Anterior application for surgical navigation.
- Materialise received FDA 510(k) clearance to market its Surgicase Orthopaedics system for pre-op planning in pediatric patients undergoing radius and ulna osteotomies.
- OrthAlign commenced full commercial launch of UniAlign™, the first handheld surgical navigation device for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.
- Stryker announced full commercial launch of the Mako robotic-arm assisted total knee application. Mako is now the only robotic technology that can be used across total hip, total knee and partial knee replacement.
- Stryker Instruments launched System 8 power tools, including the EZout Powered Acetabular Revision System.
- Zimmer Biomet has publicly unveiled Signature Solutions, and previewed a concept device that will support personalization and intelligent instrument technology through surgical robotics.
Arthroscopy/Soft Tissue
- Active Implants completed the first US $10MM tranche of a $40MM Class D Units financing. Funds will support two ongoing clinical trials of the NUsurface® Meniscus Implant.
- DePuy Synthes Mitek Sports Medicine launched a suite of knee arthroscopy implants and instruments for anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus repair.
- Study results indicate that Rotation Medical’s collagen-based Bioinductive Implant induced new tissue formation in all study participants with large and massive rotator cuff tears.
- Soft Tissue Regeneration closed a US $1.5MM Series C Financing and rebranded as Biorez.
- Tissue Regenix announced a planned 2018 launch for dCELL® decellularization technology in the U.S. for orthopaedic applications, initially addressing ACL repair.
Spine
- Implanet announced integration of its Jazz Claw device into the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and entry into an exclusive partnership with Device Technologies for product distribution in Australia and New Zealand.
