Five-year results from a randomized clinical trial of the Cartiva Synthetic Cartilage Implant (SCI) in the treatment of great toe arthritis demonstrated pain relief and functional outcomes equivalent to first MTP arthrodesis at two years post-op, with no cases of implant fragmentation, wear or bone loss.
Results were gathered from 27 patients at three Canadian sites participating in the 236-patient prospective multi-center pivotal clinical trial. Midterm findings indicate:
Durable pain relief (91% mean reduction in pain at 5 years)
Sustained functional improvement (128% mean improvement in sports activities)
42% improvement in range of motion from baseline
Cartiva SCI received FDA premarket approval in July 2016, and is the only synthetic cartilage device approved by FDA.
