Medtronic Orthopedic Solutions has launched to support total joint replacement episodes of care, addressing the CMS Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement bundled payment initiative.
The business model is intended to help providers meet CJR requirements by reducing system costs while addressing patient satisfaction and outcomes, and includes the launch of the value-based total knee arthroplasty system acquired with MDT’s purchase of Responsive Orthopedics.
The knee system will be widely available in 1H17.
As referred to in MDT’s June 2016 Analyst Day, aspects of the model include:
Care Pathways – coordinating patient management and care team collaboration across pre-op, acute and post-acute settings to identify areas to reduce costs and improve efficiencies, patient satisfaction and outcomes (MDT is compensated upon achievement of successful outcomes and cost savings for customers)
Remote Patient Monitoring – to support at-home recovery and deliver information to providers
Implants – the Responsive Orthopedics total knee, FDA-cleared and made in the U.S. using well-studied materials, supported intra-operatively by a clinical specialist
Bleeding Control with the Aquamantys™ System – used in a high-risk segment of patients undergoing orthopaedic procedures
Results from the Medtronic Orthopedic Solutions business will be reported as part of MDT’s Spine division within the Restorative Therapies Group.
