DePuy Synthes signed a definitive agreement to acquire the assets of Medical Enterprises Distribution, developer of the automated ME1000™ Surgical Impactor for use in hip replacement. The transaction is slated to close in 2Q18; terms were not disclosed.
The battery-powered ME1000 automates bone preparation, implant assembly and positioning, and replaces the handheld mallet. It is intended to support more consistent clinical outcomes and reduce surgeon fatigue/injury. DePuy plans to develop the technology for a range of orthopaedic procedures.
Further, ME1000 can be used with a variety of surgical approaches, including the anterior approach employed with DePuy’s ACTIS Total Hip. ME1000 is also compatible with JointPoint hip navigation, for which DePuy signed an exclusive marketing agreement in 2017.
