NuVasive Launches LessRay Software

Share:

NuVasive (NUVA) launched LessRay®, hardware and software designed to minimize overexposure to radiation in the O.R., especially during minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS).

NUVA acquired the proprietary software algorithm and technology from SafeRay Spine in 4Q16. Units will be sold as a capital sale or lease, with a focus on spine and potentially addressing additional markets, over time.

LessRay offers dual benefits of lower radiation exposure and O.R. efficiency. Its image enhancement capability allows low-radiation x-ray images to exhibit similar diagnostic abilities as conventional, full-dose fluoroscopy images, and fewer fluoroscopic shots are needed. Radiation exposure and imaging ability have limited MIS adoption in spine, as opposed to use in general orthopaedic MIS procedures. In spine, MIS can enable less blood loss, lower infection risk and speedier recovery.

The LessRay system also features C-arm tracking, image stitching, an angle finder to obtain clear endplate shots with fewer fluoroscopic images than traditional C-arm scouting and an alternate view that renders metal instruments invisible or semi-transparent by fading out their obstruction.
