NuVasive and Siemens Healthineers Partner on Surgical Automation Tools

Share:

NuVasive (NUVA) and Siemens Healthineers entered into a Spine Precision Partnership™ to integrate NUVA's Pulse™ surgical automation platform with Siemens' Cios Spin mobile 3D C-arm.

The companies will develop intra-operative 3D imaging and navigation tools to support quality assurance in minimally invasive spine surgery and improve O.R. workflow efficiency. This can offer hospitals an alternative to cost intensive CT scans.

Cios Spin is pending FDA 510(k) clearance. Its options and features include Screw Scout, to automatically localize screws and prepare the optimal view of any screw in the 3D dataset; Target Pointer, to deliver a trajectory that helps surgeons optimally position k-wires or other devices; and anti-microbial surfaces, specially developed hardware and a cleaning concept focused on infection prevention.

As noted by analysts at Wells Fargo, such a partnership could help drive capital equipment placements. While this partnership is spine-centric, the Pulse system is cleared for neurophysiologic monitoring during neck dissections, thoracic surgeries and upper/lower extremities (as well as spinal surgery), and LessRay low-dose radation software is cleared for use in any application where a fluoroscope is used to diagnose and treat disease.

Pulse surgical automation is the foundation for NuVasive's Surgical Intelligence™ system that received FDA 510(k) clearance last month.
