Research / Technology

A team at the National Research Council of Italy, finding that biomimetic materials demonstrate strength and flexibility similar to natural bone, seeks to exploit the hierarchical physical structure of rattan wood to create synthetic scaffolds with which to replace damaged and lost bone. Though the process to remove incompatible chemical components could be long and complex, researchers believe that benefits (low-cost material, good biomechanics and biocompatibility) would far outweigh the challenges.
