Smith & Nephew (SNN) announced the first surgical case of its NAVIO™ robotics-assisted surgical system in a total knee replacement (TKR) procedure, using the JOURNEY™ II BCS knee.
SNN received FDA 510(k) clearance for use of NAVIO with total knee replacement in 2Q16. NAVIO intra-operative planning software uses 3D surface capture to support a patient-specific approach, and unlike other robotics-assisted platforms, does not require a pre-op CT scan.
The new approach, which recently received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration, uses the NAVIO Surgical System to implant the JOURNEY™ II BCS and CR total knee systems.
Previous to the new TKR indication, SNN’s JOURNEY PFJ, JOURNEY UNI, STRIDE™ and ZUK partial knees have been available for use with the NAVIO system. NAVIO is available for use with the JOURNEY II BCS and CR total knees, with additional systems to be supported in the future.
