aap Implantate was granted European patent EP 2 593 152 B1 for its magnesium implant technology, to describe and protect the process by which the company’s magnesium implants are coated.
aap seeks to develop implants that degrade biologically after healing of the fracture or defect, obviating the need for implant removal. The devices are small screws and plates made of a magnesium alloy with a hydroxyapatite coating added through a plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The coating controls the speed of degradation.
This resorbable magnesium implant technology has a wide range of applications, such as sports medicine, craniomaxillofacial procedures and pediatrics. aap will target U.S. markets first with mini and small fragment plates, and will further jointly develop the technology with future partners.
